August 18, the FIDE presidential candidate Arkady Dvorkovich and the ninth world champion Zhu Chen took part in the prize giving ceremony of the Malaysian Chess Festival. This grandiose festival, including a team championship, tournaments for juniors and seniors, a family tournament, a blitz and a rapid tournament, an open tournament and simuls, has been held for the 15th time and has gathered about a thousand participants.
Zhu Chen, "I am going to have a simul on 30 boards to celebrate a 30-year anniversary of my victory at the U12 Girls World Championship. Besides, Malaysia is a memorable place for me as it was here that I met my husband Mohamed Al Mudahka when he was playing at the Asian Junior Championship. Meanwhile, it is one of the festival sponsors, Dato Arthur Tan, who helped me a lot at the onset of my chess career – but for his support, my path to the world champion title could have taken much longer. I am sincerely grateful to Dato Arthur Tan for his assistance and for what he does for chess in general."
Arkady Dvorkovich met Datuk Zahidi Bin Zainul Abidin, President of the Malaysian Chess Federation; Orio Rogelio, President of the Guam Chess Federation, and Dr. Ambarukmi Dwi Hatmisari, a delegate from the Indonesian Chess Federation. The meeting was about the future of chess and enjoyed in a positive atmosphere.
